Cancer Council provides shade for secondary schools

September 6th, 2016 · Published to Playgrounds by Steve Lewis

A few years back, I was extremely glad to read that the Cancer Council was providing shade structures to secondary schools. The grant program that was launched was highly successful. As a shade solution provider, I couldn’t be any happier.

Now, in 2016, this grant program is back and it promises to make even more of a difference. I thought that it would be a good idea to offer you some details about this wonderful grant program. Whether you’re a school leader, a government worker, or a concerned parent, I’m sure reading about this program will make you happier.

Continue reading as I provide a brief summary of the 2013 and the 2016 grant programs that promise to battle skin cancer in Australia.

The 2016 grant program

After a successful campaign in 2013 with donations of $1 million, the Cancer Council has announced the 2016 grant program. The grant program has received donations of $250,000 this year. These proceeds will be used to provide shade to 18 secondary schools in Australia.

In 2013, the grant program successfully provided shade structures to several secondary schools in Australia. With 45 grants, the program was used to protect over 28,000 children from the harsh Australian sun.

The 2016 grant program aims at constructing portable and permanent school shade structures. These donations have primarily been made through EFTPOS.

Awareness on skin cancer

Australia is known to have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. School children lie at the most risk to skin cancer as they spend a lot of time playing outdoors. The grant program has been largely successful in spreading awareness on sun protection measures.

Back in 2013, the grant program had received tremendous support. It was successfully used to educated people on skin cancer and how to prevent it. Now, in 2016, this program aims at further reducing the risk of skin cancer by providing more school shade structures.

Following in the steps of the successful 2013 program, the 2016 program promises to provide UV protection to more students.

Personally, I think that this grant program is a wonderful initiative. What this program had achieved back in 2013 was simply amazing. Now, with even more school shade structures being offered in 2016, I am even more glad. I hope that a day will come when every school in Australia is able to have such privileges.

Conclusion:

The Cancer Council has announced its 2016 grant program for offering school shade structures. This is a follow up to the largely successful 2013 program, which provided shade solutions to more than 28,000 children. The 2013 program had funds of $1 million through donations for this purpose. Now, in 2016, this program is back with another additional $250,000 in donations. These proceeds will be used to provide shade structures to 18 schools all over Australia. Hopefully, a day will come when all Australian schools will be able to provide adequate shade solutions to children.
