school shade structuresAs you may be aware, we here in Australia experience an abnormal amount of UV radiation and it is this radiation that is the primary cause of skin cancer.

Thankfully, this fact is recognised by local governments and councils alike. Many initiatives are already underway which aim to reduce the risk of skin cancer in Australians.

The SunSmart Shade Initiative 2017 is one such initiative which has me thrilled as well. This initiative will encourage more schools and not-for-profit organisations to invest in school shade structures. As someone who offers shade solutions in Australia, no doubt I’m thrilled about this initiative.

So, continue reading this article to discover what the SunSmart Shade Initiative 2017 is about and how it can benefit not only your school, but the health of your pupils as well.

The SunSmart Shade Initiative

The SunSmart Shade Initiative 2017 is a wonderful initiative supported by the Queensland Department of Health and Cancer Council Queensland. Under this initiative, schools and other not-for-profit organisations can avail of 50% funding for installing school shade structures.

Specifically, this initiative will offer matched funding of up to $2,000 for portable shade structures and up to $5,000 for permanent shade structures.

As such, if your school is based out of Queensland, you should definitely consider taking part in this initiative. This is the perfect time for you to invest in school shade structures.

However, there are certain criteria which your organisation must fulfil so as to be eligible for this initiative.  First of all, your organisation should be based out of Queensland. Secondly, if your organisation is a not-for-profit organisation, then you’ll need to submit necessary proof along with your application. Also, your organisation should cater to 0-18 years old and you should not have received funding under the SunSmart Grant Scheme 2015 or the SunSmart Shade Creation Initiative 2016.

If your organisation fulfils these criteria, then you should register for the SunSmart Shade Initiative 2017.

Which school shade structures to consider

Under the SunSmart Shade Initiative 2017, you can obtain funding for installing school shade structures. Here, you’ll need to decide whether you want to invest in a portable or a permanent shade structure.

Portable shade structures are shade solutions that you can assemble and disassemble as per your requirements. Marquees are a popular example of portable school shade structures. Many schools use marquees for providing shade during annual events and special festivals. If you think that you should invest in marquees for your school, then you can obtain up to $2,000 in funding under the SunSmart Shade Initiative.

On the other hand, you can also choose to install permanent school shade structures. Examples of these types of shade structures include shade sails and shade structures or other structures such as pergolas and hard roofs. However, once you install such a structure, you won’t be able to disassemble it whenever you fancy. So, if you’re planning for a permanent shade structure, make sure to consider its location very carefully. Under the SunSmart Shade Initiative, you can obtain up to $5,000 in funding for your shade structure installation.
