Shade sails are one of the best improvements you can make to the exterior of your home, business or establishment. For homeowners, they allow you to appreciate the outdoors more and for business and establishments, they allow you to protect staff and attract more customers.

But the question when buying shade sails is always, do you opt for custom or pre-made? If you want my advice, the answer should be custom made shade sails every time.

Granted, I am biased given that I am a manufacturer of custom made shade sails, but there are great benefits of buying custom made shade sails over pre-made shade sails off-the-shelf. These benefits are addressed below.

They can be made to any shape or size

The obvious advantage offered by custom made shade sails over pre-made shade sails is that they can be made tailored to your needs. If you have an area that has a peculiar shape that isn’t suitable to a standard square or triangle shade sail, you’re able to have one custom made.

Likewise, if you have an area that is much larger than the size of shade sails available in the pre-made range, you’ll be able to have a custom made shade sail made to cover the area required.

You can choose the shade fabric

Another benefit offered by custom made shade sails over pre-made shade sails is that you get to choose the fabric that you want the sail/s made out of. This also means you get some control over the price you will pay as the fabrics vary in price depending on their quality.

There are more colour options available

With custom made shade sails, you have a much larger choice of colour options to choose from than what is offered with pre-made shade sails. If you go to your local home improvement store, for example, you will generally have two or three colours to choose from.

However, with custom made shade sails, along with choosing the fabrics, you are able to choose the colour. The available colours will depend on the fabric you choose. But to give you an example, the Z16 fabric has 24 stylish colours to choose from.

They generally offer better protection and quality

In some cases, you may find that you’re able to find pre-made shade sails that offer 90-95% UV protection, but this isn’t common and with our custom made shade sails, we’re able to offer up to 99% UV protection.

In terms of quality, this comes down to the warranty offered by the fabric. As the level of protection, there are pre-made shade sails that offer impressive warranties – I’ve seen some at 15 years, which is actually higher than some of the fabrics we use (which are generally 10 years).

Are custom made shade sails worth it? Absolutely!  When you weigh up the fact that custom made shade sails offer better protection, more fabric choices and colours, and can be made to any size or shape, you will see that they are clearly the better choice over pre-made shade sails.
