6 ways to stay cool all year long

August 2nd, 2017 · Published to Shade Solutions by Steve Lewis

Australia certainly experiences hot weather throughout the year, but more so during summer. Summer brings with it sweltering temperatures, which for some, are too much to bear.

But what if I told you, you can stay cool all year long, regardless of the season? Well, you can, simply by investing in shade structures for your home or your yard. In fact, by investing in shade structures, you can lower the overall temperature under the fabric by some 10-30 degrees.

As someone who has offered shade structures across Australia for over 25 years, I’m somewhat an expert on the subject. Today, I will list some shade structures you can consider that’ll help you reduce the temperature in your home or yard. These structures are all recommended by the Cancer Council, so listen up!

1. Permanent systems

Permanent systems are highly durable shade structures that are designed to withstand all weather conditions. These structures usually consist of a heavy-duty shade fabric which is stretched across a framed structure. This fabric is what blocks out the sun and reduces the temperature underneath.

Some common examples of permanent systems include covered decks, pergolas and verandas, among others.

2. Demountable systems

Demountable systems are semi-permanent shade structures that can be easily put up or pulled down. These structures are used if permanent structures are not suitable for installation or if only temporary shade is required. Such systems consist of a lightweight shade fabric that is stretched across a temporary frame.

Lightweight shade sails, tents and marquees are some common types of demountable systems.

3. Adjustable systems

Adjustable systems are special structures which can be modified to change the angle of shade as the sun moves. Typically, these systems are attached to buildings and make use of retractable devices. Again, a shade fabric is used in this system and it is what helps reduce the temperature.

Louvres and canvas awnings are some of the most common types of adjustable systems.

4. Tension membrane structures (TMS) or shade sails

Shade sails are probably the most common of shade structures. They are available both as demountable and permanent systems and make use of high-quality fabric to create shade. Shade sails can also be waterproof for all-weather protection.

5. Off-the-shelf structures (DIY Shade Sails)

While shade sails are available in many standard pre-engineered designs and sizes, these may not be suitable for all. For such cases, DIY shade sails are very popular with us Aussies. They are a cost-effective structure that is always readily available. The biggest advantage of these shade sails is that they are incredibly easy to assemble and dismantle.

DIY shade sails make use of the same high-quality shade fabric that is used in tension membranes or shade sails.

6. Portable shade

Portable shade structures are ideal for use as temporary shade in areas where other shade options don’t exist. They provide a quick, cheap and easy solution to finding quick shade from the sun.

Outdoor umbrellas, small tents and beach shelters are some common types of portable shade. Every one of these makes use of shade fabric to block out the sun and to reduce the temperature.

Conclusion:

To stay cool all year long, consider investing in shade structures. Choose a permanent system if you want permanent shade around your home or yard. Alternatively, you can consider a demountable system or adjustable system if you want more flexibility with your shade. Shade sails, tension membrane structures and DIY shade sails are cost-friendly options for creating shade. Finally, choose portable shade structures if you want to take your shade along with you.
